Using our Products

Compost,  whether it is made conventionally or through the action of composting worms is partially decomposed organic matter.

It is an organic fertiliser and soil conditioner in one.  Mature, well made compost should have a pleasant, earthy smell, and be dark brown and friable in appearance.  Rich in humus, it improves the structure and moisture holding capacity of all soils and prevents erosion. It’s nutrients support living soil organisms that are vital to soil health.

Our wonderful Zambian climate and year round growing season means that organic material is used up very fast. To maintain fertility and health, our soils need to be replenished regularly with a good quality, mature compost.

By using Ecobiz compost products as recommended, you will soon notice not only healthier, greener growth, but in time the need for less water, as well as reduced dependence on pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Best of all – with continued use of our composts and castings, combined with good practice, the indigenous earthworm will thrive and perpetuate what you have started by, aerating and fertilising your soils, asking for nothing in return but the right environment to do so. Having earthworms in your soils is a really good sign that you have healthy soil.

Ecobiz Compost

Soil Preparation & Conditioning

Apply a 2-6cm  of Ecobiz Sifted Compost (or Ecobiz Vermicompost) to the soil surface and work it in to a depth of about 10 – 20 cm. Compost will improve structure of all soil types and replenish with it with essential nutrients and organic matter. This is especially important before planting out any new plant material.

For Lawns, Turfs & Greens

After mowing your lawn short, spike to aerate, and apply a 2-3 cm layer of Ecobiz Sifted Compost or Vermicompost. Lightly rake in and then irrigate as usual. For healthy and otherwise problem free lawns this should be done at least once a year around June/July. For old/stressed/uneven lawns that need rejuvenation apply as necessary to encourage vigorous growth and until desired result is achieved.

As a Mulch

Ecobiz Mulch Grade Compost has a coarser texture that Ecobiz Sifted Compost which makes it an ideal nutritious mulch. Not only does it looks great, and give the soil surface a dressed look,  it will protect your soils from moisture loss, insulate against extreme temperatures, prevent erosion and stifle weeds. For best results first nourish soils as needed, water well around any new plantings, then finally, seal in the goodness by applying a 2-5cm thick layer of Ecobiz Mulch Grade Compost over all exposed soil surfaces taking care to keep mulch away from making direct contact with trunks or stems. Compost mulch will break down gradually over time, so will need to be replenished as needed.  If a finer finish is desired, use Ecobiz Sifted Compost instead.

Compost Plus

Use as directed with Ecobiz Sifted Compost but especially when planting out new plant material.
Excellent for treating stressed or under-nourished lawns and when re-potting plants.

Pure Worm Castings

Seedling Starter

On Transplantation:  Prepare ground as recommended, then add 1 heaped tblsp (approx 20g) Ecobiz Pure Worm Castings into prepared hole. Set seedling plug on top, close over, and water well. Moisture retaining Ecobiz Pure Worm Castings will reduce losses through transplantation shock, provide instant plant available nutrition, growth hormones, and disease fighting beneficial microorganisms around the root zone, where its needed most. 10kg of Ecobiz Pure Worm Castings is sufficient to plant out up to 500 seedlings! For best results follow with a mulch of Ecobiz Mulch Grade Compost or Ecobiz Sifted Compost over surrounding soil surface.

For Fertilizing Indoor & Outdoor Plants

Ecobiz Pure Worm Castings are a safe and effective way of ensuring balanced nutrition is delivered to even the most delicate plants. Add 2-3cm Ecobiz Pure Worm Castings on surface of pot or surrounding soil, fork in lightly, water and finish off with a mulch of Ecobiz Mulch Grade or Sifted Compost.

Worm Tea

Worm tea is an aerated brew of worm castings dissolved in water and other ingredients to create a tonic rich in microorganisms for  all plants and soils. This very versatile pro-biotic brew can be sprayed over lawns and all indoor and outdoor plants and trees or applied as a drench over soils. Using worm tea is an extremely effective way of getting the benefits of worm castings over a greater area. Just 500g castings makes up to 20 litres of Worm tea and Worm tea can be applied neat or diluted every 10 – 14 days. Like any spray, it is best applied in the late afternoon. It is especially good for lawns to keep fungal disease and troublesome thatch build up at bay, as well as deter troublesome insects.

CAUTION Do not spray while bees are busy pollinating as its powerful insecticidal properties are indiscriminate!

Instructions for use and Worm Tea recipe are enclosed in every bag of ECOBIZ Pure Worm Castings
